“Fame…. I’m gonna live forever…!”

Saturday 26th August 2017, the day of Manchester’s annual LGBTQ Pride Parade, saw the sun shining brightly as WI members from all over the North West gathered to take part in this now legendary event.  The theme of this year’s parade was ‘Graduation’ and, never missing an opportunity to dress up in outrageous costumes, Salford Angels WI decided to graduate from “Fame Academy”!

With our leotards, legwarmers, headbands, sparkly t-shirts and an array of colourful wigs, we danced along to a specially chosen soundtrack of disco and pop tunes.  At the end of the parade, we all piled into the nearest pub – still in full costume – for beer, wine and a plate of chips.  We WI ladies don’t do things by halves!

If you every though that WI ladies have a reputation for being staid and restrained, we certainly broke the mould during the parade!  It was a day of laughter, fun, love and tolerance, reaffirming our Pride in a city united in hope after the devastation of the terrorist attack earlier in the year as well as showing our support for and solidarity with the LGBTQ community.

The next day as the Pride events came to a close, the WI ladies won the “Spirit of the Parade” award.  What an honour and a pleasure it was to march alongside WI ladies from across the region as well as our LGBTQ friends.  Thanks to everyone who came along and made the day such a fantastic success.  Congratulations Class of 2017!!

Here’s to Pride 2018!
