Edwardian Tea Anyone

If I knew you were coming I’d have baked a cake…..

Last weekend saw the Civic Lawns in Swinton covered in marquees as Salford City Council held its first Spirit of Salford Family Weekender, and for a change, the sun shone brightly for both days.

The Saturday saw craft and activities, food and drink, performances by The BBC Philharmonic Quartet, The Smiths Ltd, Ren Harvieu from Broughton and tenor Jon Christos from Monton. The evening culminated in a spectacular firework show.

But this merely a warm up for the Sunday, which celebrated the Big Lunch. There was a vintage market, a dog show, families came to the Teddy Bears picnic and of course, an Edwardian Tea Tent, manned by Salford Angels WI. Our ladies had baked up a storm, and our tables were laden with Victoria sponges, chocolate cakes, lemon drizzle cakes and Barra Brith (Welsh fruitcake), tea, coffee and fruit juice. We were lucky enough to share our marquee with Windy Hop, a fantastic 1930s  & 40s dance group and the Barton Theatre Company re-enacted Vesta Tilley’s WWI propaganda song to encourage young men to enlist. Several of our ladies were dressed in Edwardian costumes, the smart ones weren’t, we’d seen the weather forecast for hot and sunny, and although they were a little hot under the collar, and hat, they served tea and cake and added a great atmosphere to the occasion. The Weekender was a great event and we hope that everyone who attended had as much fun as we did.

If you’re interested in dressing up, baking or even just eating cake, then why not come along to a monthly meeting, this month it’s Thursday 19th May and we are holding our annual picnic at Winton Park from 7pm. For more info visit www.salfordangelswi.co.uk, Facebook or call Suzanne on 07581471530.
