Garden Club
Back in 2011 when Salford Angels first began, we thought it would be a nice idea to have a community garden, where green-fingered, and keen novices alike could grow beautiful blooms and luscious fruit.
But where could this garden be? Luckily Rev. Andy Salmon came to our rescue, as when we approached him with the idea of taking over a raised bed in front of Sacred Trinity Church on Chapel Street, Andy obligingly said yes.
So, in the late spring of 2012, a group of us descended. We weeded, removing nettles and thistles, some of which were about 5 ft tall, removed excess hedging and planted up lavender and fruit trees.
Fast forward to May 2014. Most of our original garden club members have moved out of Salford, and a few are on maternity leave but with a core band remaining and new members showing an interest the garden club met again to tackle this years weeds.
Once again the nettles and thistles were thriving and took quite a bit of brute force to remove, the lavender had over-wintered well, but the best bit was that our fruit trees are bearing their first fruit. So if your passing Sacred Trinity and fancy helping yourself to an apple or some plums when they have ripened, then please feel free.
Later this year, our garden group will be planting some Alliums there and the WI Centenary Rose which is available to members from September onwards.
Later this month we will be visiting Platt Fields costume museum to get some inspiration for this years ‘Inspirational Women of the Centenary’ Calendar and in August we have a family fun day and picnic at Crocky Trail in Warrington.
