June 2012 meeting – Cocktails galore!

The Salford Angels descended on the ‘Rhum Room’ upstairs in Mojo’s, Manchester for our first external meeting.  Once all the formal business was over, there were just under 20 giddy women eagerly awaiting the cocktail skills of our bartender, Sam.

After going through what the plan was for the evening, he made a couple of iced teas to tickle our taste buds. He split the group in two and the first group made Long French Martini’s.  Sam was faced with 9 eager faces armed with a cocktail shaker, glass and shot glass and they were ready to mix! There was lots of squeezin’, shakin’ and gigglin’! Sam wanted to know when our first calendar was out so we have our first customer – the cheeky rascal!

Each lady was given a recipe sheet to practice at home and Long Island Iced Teas were the next cocktails to grace the bar.  Sam gave us a history lesson about prohibition times and let’s just say the half shot measures were a bit dubious at times! As the convey belt of cocktail making was in full swing, we forgot about not having our monthly instalment of homemade cakes! However, there was also a 80’s music quiz to take our mind off it including a team called ‘In Yer Endo’!  After a few raspberry kamikaze shots, the competition continued with a mojito making competition.  Sam was the chief taster and there were some serious competitive, concentrating faces from the Salford Angels and even cries of sabotage whilst someone described it as crushing their mint was like massaging a cow!

After a heated battle, Mags and Vicky made it through to the competition final where they had to remake the Mojito with no reminders from Sam. After much deliberation Sam crowned Mags the champion and rewarded her with a cocktail making kit to take home. We are now eagerly awaiting an invite to Mags hoping she will put here new skills to good practice!
