Moving film inspires our fundraising

We do a lot at Salford Angels WI so its nice to look forward to our monthly meeting where we can get together and catch up on what we’ve been doing. Not that it was a time to just kick back and relax – the formal part of the meeting finished and we split into two groups. Out first group of ladies met with Karen our Yoga Teacher for the evening.  Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental well-being. The main components of yoga are postures and breathing. The practice originated in India about 5,000 years ago, and has been adapted in other countries in a variety of ways. We we learning Hatha yoga which is a gentle form of yoga, great for our taster session, and widely available in centres across the City.

After all that exercise we felt we’d earned a piece of cake and some tea back in the Creation Cafe. It was our turn to hear from the Salford Young Carers. Zoe and Jordan stepped up to introduce a film which was made with the Lowry starring the young carers and Maxine Peake, telling the story of a family who’s mum was struggling with illness and how the children coped in their own ways. Jordan told us the film took a group of young carers six months to plan, and how it tries to help people understand that young carers are not different to other children but need to do different things. Zoe and Jordan also spoke about how important Salford Young Carers is to them, offering them advice, support and chances to enjoy trips out. We all found the film very powerful and it really helped motivate us to raise money for this great cause.

The film, ‘We’re not Different, we just do Different things’, is on Youtube and the SYC’s wesbsite,www.salfordcarerscentre.co.uk
