Angels Local History Group
Salford Angels W.I has recently set up a Local History group. As our members come from the four corners of the City we will be covering a myriad of topics over the coming months and years.
Our first project, however, is looking at our immediate meeting point, The Angel Centre and Chapel Street. This area is currently undergoing a massive transformation with lots of regeneration work taking place, and we have decided to look at this area and record it for future generations of Angels! We are going to approach it from a multi-media prospective, using methods both old and new. These will include photographs, both digital and 35mm, video-recordings, sketches for our more artistic members and both oral history and the written word, and this is where we would like your help.
Did you live on Chapel Street and its surrounding areas? Were you a Landlord/Lady of one of the pubs that are due for demolition, The Bell Tower and The Nelson? Were you a regular at these pubs and have the odd interesting tale to tell? Did you work at the old original Salford Royal Hospital? We have named ourselves Salford Angels because we meet at The Angel Centre which is named in memory of the nurses who were killed in the bombing raid during World War II at the hospital, do you have any recollections of this tragic incident that we could put into this project? Do you remember any spectacular weddings that took place at Salford’s majestic Cathedral? Did your Mum and Dad own a shop in the area?
We would love to hear from anyone who has any interesting stories, memories and photographs from this important thoroughfare in Salford.
Our Local History Group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Angel Centre at 7.30pm. Cost is £1.50 which includes wine and nibbles.
