Brave Brenda does it again…

On a lovely summer’s day that was a little windy at times, with thinly spaced light cloud, I was joined by friends from the WI as I prepared for a fourteen thousand feet tandem skydive. On arrival at the North West Parachute Centre we set ourselves up for afternoon tea.

Assorted Sandwiches, Lemon Drizzle Cake and Tea in the open – this is after all WI. Complete with lots of convivial conversation the afternoon is set up for one of the most exhilarating experiences you would wish for.

As the PAC XL-50 aircraft takes to the air the instructor points out the landmarks below, notably Morecambe Bay; Barrow; Lake Windermere and Lake Coniston.  As we approached the required altitude the door opens and we sat in the doorway awaiting the green light to jump.

We exit the aircraft head first into the abyss completing two rolls before straightening up as we go into freefall travelling at over one hundred miles an hour. It is a strange experience responding to the cameraman who is also in freefall just feet away from you.  A quick thumbs up to say all is well and for everyone to see the pleasure that envelops me as we plunge downwards.

After almost a minute in freefall my instructor Derrick tugs at his ripcord and we slow down as the bright orange Chute opens out.  What a breathtaking view as I look around over Morecambe Bay and across the Irish Sea. As we turn in the air the wonderful great British countryside stretches as far as I can see with the blue lakes highlighted against England’s green and pleasant land.
