Gardening Club gets stuck in!
The call went out. The spades were readied. And perhaps more importantly, the cake was baked!
Last week saw Salford Angels WI go back to their roots to transform an over grown area in front of Sacred Trinity Church on Chapel Street. This was no guerrilla gardening; Priest-in-charge of St Philip with St Stephen & Sacred Trinity, Andy Salmon gave us the nod to take over and transform the space.
Our vision is to plant up the Chapel Street/Blackfriars corner with fruit trees, plants and herbs to surprise, inspire and encourage people to take a moment to slow down and have a look around at the natural environment that meanders through our urban landscape.
This was our first planting evening and the Salford weather was very kind! Under a blue sky we weeded, removed rubbish and prepared the soil for the Hidcote Lavenders and dwarf Conference pear tree. With dirty hands and proud hearts we did what we do best, had a cuppa (thanks Rebecca) and a slice of freshly baked cake (thanks Mags).
This was just the start of our planting plans, there’s plenty more to follow with funding support from National WI for more fruit trees/ canes and plants along with a selection of herbs. So watch this space!
