It’s Not Just About Salford…

Salford Angels W.I. is lucky enough to be part of the Lancashire Federation of W.I.s, we are one in over one hundred groups of ladies from all over county from as far north as Lancaster to as far south as well, us!

Being part of this group comes with the opportunity to take part in some great activities like the Jubilation Tea Party and The Preston Guild. But that’s not all.

As a whole the W.I. is a force to be reckoned with and when we put our minds and spirit into campaigns we can have dramatic effects, ask Tony Blair how it feels to be slow hand clapped at the National Conference by thousands of women.

Recently, Lancashire Federation made the national news. The W.I. is supporting the local dairy farmers in their fight to get a fair pay for a fine pinta, and a group from the Federation were ‘moved on’ by the police for protesting (peacefully) outside Asda in Preston. These ladies walk proudly in the footsteps of our forebears the Suffragettes who campaigned for women to have the vote and be treated more equally to their male counterparts.

The W.I.’s last motion for Conference was to campaign for more midwives to be trained and employed in Britain, and one of their most memorable campaigns to date was to ‘Keep Britain Tidy’, which anyone from over the age of 30 will remember.

So, as a small part in this big organisation we look forward to taking part in many National Campaigns ourselves and maybe, just maybe, making the National News someday too.
