Local History Group Walk

Our first Local History walk brought a grey sky but lots of enthusiasm from our intrepid ladies (and one honorary gentleman!).

We met at the Angel Centre on Chapel Street to make our own document of the changing face of the Chapel Street area at this time of change and regeneration. In the process we hoped to learn more about the buildings and spaces which are still here and those that have disappeared over the years.

One half of the group, armed with cameras, both digital and 35mm, and a pen and paper to create beautiful stretches turned to the buildings and urban landscapes which dominate the area. We enjoyed capturing the strong Victorian architecture of the Education Office and the old Salford Royal Hospital building – including the plaque which commemorates the names of the 14 nurses who perished in the bombs which hit the area in 1941. These are the ‘The Salford Angels’ from whom we take our name. We also looked at some of the buildings which are looking unloved and took the chance to capture them before the next stage of the Chapel Street regeneration gets going.

The rest of the group armed with local knowledge and the Chapel Street Heritage Trail www.visitsalford.info/chapeltrail.htm explored closer to the Manchester border and lots of varied things such as Sacred Trinity Church which dates from 17th Century and was painted by LS Lowry and Griffin Court where Mrs Meadowcroft and the temperance movement encouraged us all to drink Vimto!

We will be meeting again on the 10th October to look over everything we’ve found.
