Snap Happy
Everyone likes to take photos these days. Whenever you go to an event, a concert or even a when tragedy strikes there is normally someone with a camera phone capturing it for posterity – or notoriety. With the ease of uploading your images to social media sites such as facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Flickr it has never been easier to share your holidays, dinner or those embarrassing family snaps which would normally be tucked away in the album until your Auntie Doris comes round for tea.
We should all be aware of these images being available for people to see the world over and remembering that your new boss probably doesn’t need to see your photos of Magaluf with the girls, but do we think about the quality of the images and what makes a really good photo?
That’s something we’re learning at the new Salford Angels WI Photography group. Regular readers of this column may remember earlier this year we took a walk out to Chapel Street and captured some great images before the developers came in. it’s interesting how much has changed already. We are also creating our own Calendar and having great fun dressing up as ladies over the decades while resident photographers Janine and Kate make sure we all look our best.
In our last meeting we went through some photo’s we’d taken and Janine helped us understand how understanding the basic rules of composition makes a big difference. We then went though how using some simple editing techniques can really improve images so we can save those moments even when they don’t look perfect at first.
We were then given some tasks to work on at home so we can use what we’ve learned. A good phrase is, ‘you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take’, so look out for us putting that into practice. Please check the website for our next Photography group meeting if you’d like to get involved too.
Salford Angels WI meets on the third Thursday of the month at the Angel Centre on Chapel Street at 6.30pm. www.salfordangelswi.co.uk
