Supporting Keep Britain Tidy

The Women’s Institute has often been at the forefront of major campaigns in Britain. In 1954, a resolution was passed at the Annual General Meeting, which resulted in the beginnings of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, now an independent charity. The campaign was founded in response to the amount of litter on the streets and unfortunately, it is a problem that it still very relevant today.

To celebrate 60 years of inspiring work by Keep Britain Tidy, a Jubilee Awards has been held honouring those who have done the most to aid the campaign. The awards were attended by Keep Britain Tidy Ambassador, TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp and our very own Kate Hadfield. The nominees support the environment locally and nationally and were from a range of environmental improvement sectors. The winners of The Women’s Institute Award were ladies from Doveridge WI.

We live in a time when environmental issues are more important than ever and Salford is very close to our hearts here at the Angels. Many of our members have grown up here and the area plays an integral part in our community activities. To honour the work of Keep Britain Tidy and the WI, as well as our love for Salford, we will be doing a litter pick on 28th March.

Helen Bingham, spokesperson for  Keep Britain Tidy said, “The need for Keep Britain Tidy is just as great today, as it was back in 1954 and we will continue to campaign for everyone’s right to live in a place that is clean and litter-free. We fully support Salford Angel’s WI in their drive to reduce litter in the City and we wish them every success with their clean up event”
