The Stinking Stocking

2015 has brought the odd change of venue. Some of you may have noticed that there are a few roadworks going on in our fair city at the moment, and this has led us to look at moving a few things around, the book club being one of them.

As the adage says ‘location is the key’, so it has to be easy to get to, by both car and public transport, needs to have a welcoming, friendly atmosphere, be in the heart of the community and provide some decent refreshment. Enter the Albert Edward! A Samuel Smith’s pub, in the centre of Eccles!

We attended our first ‘meeting’ there in February, and it was a hit. Lovely little rooms, nice landlord, friendly locals and a great dark mild at a cracking price.
We figured, if we’re going to move here permanently, lets re-brand the book club, every WI has one, so in true Angels fashion we decided ours should stand out from the crowd, so on the first Wednesday of the month we now all attend ‘The Stinking Stocking Book and Beer Club’.

I should point out, that none of us, as far as I’m aware, own a pair of stinking stockings, but if you’re local to Eccles, you’ll know that everyone of an age refers to the Albert Edward as ‘The Stinking Stocking’ due to the fact the during the building of the Manchester Ship Canal, the pub was home to many a lady of the night, looking for the company of gentlemen involved in its construction!

We even have our own logo, designed by our friend Jayne Higham, which is going to adorn t-shirts and hopefully, the odd pint pot.

So, if you’re free on the first Wednesday of the month, are a lady (not necessarily of the night), like a good book, a nice chat, having a laugh and partaking of refreshments, then why not pop down and join us. 7pm ’til they kick us out!
