October Book Club Review
Please note that this book was read by the Angels in October 2012.
The latest book to be read by the Salford Angels book club is Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. Rivers of London follows the story of young Police Constable Peter Grant, who believes that his Police work and chasing the lovely WPC Leslie May are all there is to his life.
This all changes when Peter gets dragged head first into a very unusual murder case, one which seems paranormal in nature. After attempting to take a statement from a ghost, Peter finds himself working with Inspector Nightingale, who works for a special branch of the Met. He also happens to be the last wizard in England.
Like many of our previous reads, this book triggered much divided opinions through the group. Some members loved it; the way it was written and how different the story was. Other members found that they couldn’t get into the story, (finding it too unbelievable) or the style in which it was written. Of course, it is these differences in opinion that make for an interesting book club meeting.
We felt that the story was very unique and a different take on the Magic and Fantasy genre. It was also interesting how Ben Aaronovitch almost gives the reader a tour of London throughout the book; you can tell that he loves this city.
The Angels book club has awarded Rivers of London 7/10. Some members and enjoyed it, while others felt that it wasn’t for them. So a very mixed bag of opinions.
