February Book Club Review
Please note that this book was read by the Angels in February 2013.
The first fiction novel read by the Angels book club in 2013 was The Sentry: A Joe Pike Novel by Robert Crais. The novel comes from a series of books based around the characters of Joe Pike and Elvis Cole.
The story is set after Hurricane Katrina. Characters Dru Rayne and her Uncle Wilson have settled in LA. Joe Pike, a former police officer and military man offers to help when a shop is repeatedly raided and Dru’s uncle is beaten by a protection gang. But he soon finds that the pair are being watched by agents and that he himself could potentially be next. Joe and Elvis Cole (another character from the series) find themselves in an ever more dangerous situation as the truth is uncovered.
The Sentry is another book that split the opinions of the group in half. While some loved it and have read others in the series (or intend to in future), others found that it wasn’t their type of book. They found that they couldn’t relate to the characters. Despite this, they still found it gripping, so overall, it seemed to be a good introduction to the series and the genre of modern crime novels if you are new to them.
The Angels awarded The Sentry 7/10 (this was the average of the scores given by each member of the group.)
